standards, not only of competency
and knowledge but also of ethics,” Sanz
said. “That’s what really drove him.”
Rizzardi and current TMA Global
President David F. W. Cohen both said
they first encountered Tourtellot when
he approached them and introduced
himself during networking events
at the first TMA Global conference
that each attended. Rizzardi said that
Tourtellot was more than simply
a great networker. “He was very
hospitable. He was a gentleman,”
Rizzardi said. “He understood that
when a newcomer feels welcomed,
there’s a chance that he’ll come back
again, and that’s really important.
That’s a good lesson for all of us.”
Sanz said Tourtellot focused on
reaching out to people he recognized
as newcomers to chapter and global
events. “He was always focused on
making sure people had a good
experience and got value out of the
organization, because he knew that’s
what it took to get them involved.”
Sanz said Tourtellot had decided “to
slow down a little bit” with the changing
of the guard at ABTV, as Anderson,
Bauman, Tourtellot & Vos had been
rebranded. However, he had planned
to remain involved with the TMA
Carolinas Chapter, where he was still a
member of the board of directors and
chair of the Education Committee,
and to attend TMA Global events.
“I don’t think he ever planned to
retire,” Sanz said. “He was still available
if something came along to work
on—a project or to help on a project—
so I don’t think he ever intended
just to completely walk away.”
Tourtellot is survived by his wife Jill,
two daughters, two step-children,
and five grandchildren. J
