From October 13-15, 50 young professionals
gathered in Chicago for the 2016 TMA
NextGen Leadership Meeting. Now in its
fifth year, the leadership meeting
traditionally takes place in New York City,
but the change of venue did not prevent
attendees from walking away with new
ideas and connections.
Attendees found value in the opportunity
to meet other turnaround industry
professionals from around the country—
and world. Sixteen TMA chapters
were represented, including two
TMA NextGen members plan the content of
this meeting and succeeded in having 26
speakers, including two bankruptcy judges,
participate on six panels.
Topics covered included a global economic
outlook; a TMA Network of Women (NOW)
discussion about business development;
the current lending landscape; views from
the top, a panel of senior-level TMA
professionals; and a TMA leadership panel.
In addition to professional development,
there are several sessions dedicated to best
practices—tools and ideas each person can
bring back to their chapter. It’s important
to know how to grow your chapter’s
NextGen program because NextGen
members are the future leaders of TMA
and of this industry.
A central focus of this meeting is
networking. To ensure everyone
encounters professionals with different
specialties and from different locations, a
dine-around takes place after the opening
reception. Attendees are divided into small
groups and each group is assigned a
different restaurant to allow for quality
networking in a more intimate setting.
