People I encounter in business deals
already recognize who I am. It establishes
a bit of a credential, as opposed to
just being some guy from a bank.
Q In your case, you were in Upstate New York for a long time, moved to
Denver in 2003, and then went back to
Upstate New York in 2007. Did your
familiarity with TMA help you hit the
ground running in Denver?
Absolutely. I was in Upstate,
Chapter, very effectively plug into that
local community in a relatively short
time. It was quite invaluable.
Q When you’re not doing workouts, what are you passionate about
outside the office?
I have two sons and a
daughter. My oldest son just graduated
from the University of Wisconsin and is
now in Boston. He just got a job a short
while ago in the banking business. My
second oldest son is a junior at Penn
State. My daughter is a freshman in high
school. So, I have been largely focused on
My family also has a place on Lake
Ontario, so we like to enjoy that. I
have a boat that I bought a few years
ago, which is good for taking the kids
around and tubing and water skiing
and that type of thing. It’s a lot of fun.
I enjoy golfing, walking and playing
with our two dogs, and attending
music concerts. Rochester is the home
of the Eastman School of Music and
has quite a variety of musical options,
including the annual Jazz Fest. I’m still
an avid Buffalo Bills fan. I say that as
I had season tickets for a number of
years and, as much as there have been
a number of lean and frustrating years, I
continue to believe that ultimately their
day as Super Bowl champs will come!
Q What would people who only know you in your professional capacity
be most surprised to learn about you?
We adopted our daughter
from Russia, from Sakhalin Island,
which is east of Siberia and north of
Japan. We adopted her when she was
just about to turn 3 years old. We had the
two boys at the time, and we wanted to
balance out the family, so we decided
we’d go for a girl. My wife herself had
also been adopted.
It’s difficult in Russia, so we found out,
to adopt girls versus boys. When a girl
became available, we had to be ready to
travel with limited notice and get over
there. That consisted of two nine-hour
trips from the U.S.—a nine-hour trip
to Moscow and then another nine-hour trip from Moscow to Sakhalin
Island. We arrived at 5 in the morning
Sakhalin time and got off the plane.
We were then immediately told by the
representative of the adoption agency
that the girl that had been identified
as available was no longer available.
We were ready to go home when,
lo and behold, they found our now-daughter, Lanie, who was considered
“disabled” because she had a cross-eyed
condition. It’s obviously not an issue at
all because of the medical care available
in the U.S., and we instantly bonded
with her. So we were ready to leave
very disappointed and then having the
opportunity to get our daughter and
have her become part of our family
was just a wonderful experience.
Q What items would be at the top of your personal bucket list?
Any Buffalo Bills fan wants
to see them in a Super Bowl—and win.
With my daughter, we’ve thought about
going back to Sakhalin Island when
she becomes more of age and seeing
more of where she had come from. I’d
like to go back to that place and have
that experience with my daughter.
Influenced by our daughter’s
situation, my wife has volunteered
with a not-for-profit that involves
trying to match adoptive children
with prospective adoptive parents.
They’re older children and those with
special needs. I think that’s something
I’d like to be more involved with,
helping with that kind of process.
Other than that, I’d certainly like to
travel the world, and maybe I’ll have
some chance to do that, in particular to
have more of an opportunity to explore
and learn more about the cultures of
different places around the world. J
